Sarah's Story
NAME: Sarah Loudenslager
HOMETOWN: Belleville, PA
MAJOR: Elementary Education
MINOR: Reading/Special Education
FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG:
I love that it is large enough that you are always seeing new faces, but still have the comfort of always seeing the faces of friends.
INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME:
I studied abroad in Florence, Italy and I have a Golden Retriever puppy.
CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS/SPORTS/ACTIVITIES:
I’m a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, a social-service sorority for women, and the Keystone State Reading Association, which promotes literacy through reading and promotes reading as a lifelong habit.
COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
I was involved in the Adopt a Classroom Project at Shippensburg Area Intermediate School and I volunteer in a 1st grade class at Scott Elementary School in Harrisburg.
WHAT FACULTY MEMBER IMPACTED YOU THE MOST AND WHY?
Dr. Yvonne Taylor has impacted me the most through her Reading in the Elementary School class. She took the initiative to set up a six-week partnership program with King Street Elementary School in Chambersburg, Pa, which is a school where the majority of students are English Second Language (ESL) or English Language Learners (ELL). I was able to work one-on-one with a Hispanic third grade girl on reading. It was challenging and a very eye-opening experience to realize I could have a classroom just like that someday. I thank Dr. Taylor for exposing me to this environment.
PLANS AFTER GRADUATION:
Because of my exposure to urban schools through Shippensburg, I’d like to become an elementary teacher in a large city… and later become happily married with lots of kids!
