Kristin's Story
NAME: Kristin Champlain
HOMETOWN: Abbottstown, PA
MAJOR: Social Work
MINOR: Gerontology
FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG:
The small class sizes. I've been fortunate to have a few outstanding professors that truly want to see their students succeed. Having professors that know me as a person has been helpful during my time at Shippensburg…and squashed the temptation to skip a lot of classes.
TWO INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME:
1) I was a part of the charter class that brought the FIRST and only multicultural Asian-interest Sorority (Sigma Psi Zeta National Sorority, Inc.) to campus. The Chaotic Chi Charter of Sigma Psi Zeta National Sorority, Inc. is not only the first multicultural Asian-interest sorority of its kind at Shippensburg University, but also the first within the entire Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. 2) I am a 2004 Horatio Alger Association National Scholar.
CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS/SPORTS/ACTIVITIES:
My involvement in Sigma Psi Zeta National Sorority, Inc.-Chi Charter has included serving as President, Rush Chair, and New Member Educator. I’ve served as Vice President of the Asian American Organization and Treasurer of the Multi Ethnic Student Association. I co-coordinated the Annual Diversity Day celebration (hosted by the Multi Ethnic Student Association) and am a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Program.
STUDENT/FACULTY RESEARCH PROJECT:
As required by my major, I am conducting an agency-based research project at my field placement. I’m looking at how one's educational level influences the likelihood of morbidity in later life. I will be utilizing archival data as well anonymous questionnaires in the community at a few senior centers and will compare the data with available state/national data. I have a strong interest in working with older adults, minority issues and health care.
COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
I have served as a tutor at the Scotland School for Veterans' Children and a mentor for the MLK Academic Retention Program. I also organized and participated in the Purple Ribbon Project, and participated in the Korean Adoptee Workshop, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, and the Take Back the Night Rally. I’ve had many opportunities to present including speaking at the “Art of Being: Asian American” workshop, to students in the Human Diversity course, and at a Domestic Violence Awareness Workshop.
I am also a member of the Horatio Alger Association Alumni Community Service Committee.
WHAT I DO FOR FUN:
SLEEP (which does not occur that often). I enjoy spending time with friends, cooking, going to new places (restaurants, wineries, random roadtrips, clubs), festivals, and shopping.
MY PLANS AFTER GRADUATION:
Take a nap, a really long one. Following that, I will work for about a year or so before pursuing a master's in public health (with a concentration on minority health issues and outreach initiatives), and then a doctorate.
