INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE:

For the past two summers I interned as a camp counselor in a therapeutic summer program. I worked with elementary students that have been diagnosed with emotional and/or behavioral disorders. Also, I am currently a Taylor Intern in the fifth grade classroom at Grace B. Luhrs Elementary School on campus.

STUDENT/FACULTY RESEARCH PROJECT:

As part of my internship at Grace B. Luhrs, I will complete an action reseach project. The subject of my research project will stem from my experiences as a student teacher: questions that arise about instruction, particular strategies that I'd like to test for effectiveness, or other classroom-based inquiries that I develop as I progress in my internship.

NAME:  Megan Keener
HOMETOWN: Mount Joy
MAJOR:  Elementary Education
MINOR:  Special Education

FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG:

There are many things I like about Shippensburg, but I would have to say that my favorite aspect of the University is the quality of the education department. I’ve had many opportunities to teach, observe, and interact with elementary students through my education classes and campus involvement here at Ship. I believe I am getting the best possible training for my future as a teacher.

TWO INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME:

1. I've wanted to be a teacher since I was in first grade. 2. The only food I really dislike is cheese, but I love pizza! I just take all the cheese off my pizza before I eat it.

CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS/SPORTS/ACTIVITIES:

I was a co-captain on the 2007 Shippensburg University field hockey team. I help to lead Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and I'm a member of KDP (an honors education organization) and SUEA (the Shippensburg University Education Association).

COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:

The field hockey team has developed a relationship with students at Scotland School for Veterans' Children over the past several years. It's been such a great experience getting to know the kids. I've had opportunities to tutor one-on-one and to be involved in a mentoring program with junior high girls.

WHAT I DO FOR FUN:

I love to go to large book stores that have coffee shops inside and spend time reading books and magazines. I also enjoy playing sports--especially field hockey. One of my favorite ways to relax is to watch movies with my friends. And finally, I like playing games with my family--our newest favorite is the board game "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?"

MY PLANS AFTER GRADUATION:

I plan to get a teaching job, hopefully close to home (Mt. Joy, PA). I'd also be interested in coaching field hockey, and down the road I plan to start taking graduate classes.
