SCHOLARSHIP:

I am so grateful for the support from the Ivin S. and Virginia D. Bear Scholarship Fund. The great learning experiences and extra-curricular activities I participate in would not be possible if I had to work all the time to fund my education. With scholarship support, I have the opportunity to participate in things I am passionate about and to try to make an impact in the community. I’ve learned so much from these experiences I cannot possibly thank the donors enough.

MY PLANS AFTER GRADUATION:

I plan to teach high school anatomy and physiology and hopefully coach either football or ice hockey. I also have a dream to be a summer camp director. Finally, I also plan to continue my work with Circle K and the Kiwanis Family.

Andrew's Story

NAME:  Andrew Blass
HOMETOWN: Carlisle, PA
MAJOR: Exercise Science and Biology/Secondary Education Certification
MINOR: Coaching

FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG:

The small classes and lots of activities going on. Exercise Science is a new department with a small number of students, so there have been lots of opportunities to participate in activities. My work in the department helped me secure a part-time job at the local YMCA Youth Fitness Center.

TWO INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME:

My Circle K friends and I like to paint ourselves for different things. We ended up in a Philadelphia Phillies commercial because we were caught on film at a game painted in red, white and blue. The Today Show weatherman Al Roker also got us on camera in Rockefeller Center.

CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS/SPORTS/ACTIVITIES:

I work as a professor’s assistant in the Department of Exercise Science. In clubs on campus, I am the Vice President of Projects for Circle K International at Ship and a District Service Chair for the state; also I am founder and president of the Exercise Science Club. I participate in intramural sports and am captain of a flag football team in town. I also attend and participate in Christian Fellowship and Fellowship for Christian Athletes. To further my service, this year I was accepted to the AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania Program, which sets the goal of 450 service hours per year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:

As District Service Chair for Pennsylvania, I help coordinate service initiatives across the state and travel each weekend to participate in service projects at different schools. Here at Ship, we regularly help out at King’s Kettle Food Pantry and host a monthly Red Cross blood drive among many other projects. The service work I do has changed my life. I have gained an appreciation and positive perspective on life. I understand now how well I have things. There is really little or nothing better than seeing the smile on people’s faces because you helped them when they were in need. I also met a wonderful girl through Circle K!

STUDENT/FACULTY RESEARCH PROJECT:

I’m working on a research project with Dr. Russell Robinson that focuses on how Creatine supplementation affects a person’s resting metabolism and co-presented the work at the American College of Sports Medicine regional conference in Hershey.
