Department of Biology

The Biology Department at Shippensburg University offers opportunities for students to explore a variety of areas within the biological sciences. Undergraduate concentrations in Biotechnology, Clinical Sciences, Health Professions, Secondary Education, and Ecology, Environment, and Conservation (EEC) allow students to develop skills specific to their interests and career choices. Students take a series of required courses to gain a strong foundation in life sciences, elective courses to specialize in a particular area, and general education courses to broaden their education. The biology program provides students with classroom, laboratory, and field based learning, allowing them to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in biology. First-year students have the opportunity to join the Biology Living-Learning Community where they they will live on the same floor as other biology majors and share several of their first semester classes with them. The faculty are excited to guide students in their preparation for careers or further study at the professional/graduate level. The department also offers a 4+1 program for students interested in earning a master's degree in Biology from Shippensburg Univeristy. Small class sizes provide students with numerous opportunities to receive individual attention from highly qualified professors. Opportunities are available for students to earn credit for internships and scientific research conducted under the supervision of faculty members in their areas of expertise.

Shippensburg's close proximity to federal and state research labs, state forests and parks, and medical institutions allows for unique class visits and research/internship opportunities. As a charter member of the Chincoteague Bay Field Station, Shippensburg University, in cooperation with other member colleges and universities, offers a variety of oceanographic study and research opportunities at Wallops Island, Virginia. Several clubs within the Biology Department (Biology Club, Health Sciences Clubs, and Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society) provide a variety of social and educational activities for students.
