Jesse S. Heiges Distinguished Alumnus Award 2003

University Presents Three with Distinguished Alumni Awards

Three individuals are recipients of the 2003 Jesse S. Heiges Distinguished Alumnus Award from Shippensburg University. They are Carol Antes '69, Evelyn Lebo '75 and Robert H. Long Jr. '65.

Antes has taught elementary school in the Christina School District in Newark, Del, since her graduation from Shippensburg and has expanded her sphere of influence far beyond her classroom. With a special interest in mathematics, she currently is the math director of the Delaware Aerospace Academy and a math/science instructor at the Delaware Teacher Center.

Her commitment to education has been recognized locally and nationally. She won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics in 2002, the USA Today All-USA Teacher Team Teacher Award in 1998, numerous state awards including the Delaware Secretary of Education Merit Award and the State Board of Education Order of Excellence. In addition, Carol Antes' Day was celebrated in Newark by order of the mayor based on her efforts working with education grants to facilitate learning in such fields as geometry, cooperative learning, tutoring, classroom technology, and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards. Her expertise has led to her serving as a judge for the All-USA Teacher Team awards for four years.

Besides serving on a number of school district committees, she is actively involved in her local community including her church, after-school programs, and the American Heart and American Cancer societies. She is the author of Math Matters, a bi-monthly newspaper for students in grades 2-5 and their families.

Lebo parlayed her college internship with C & W Equipment, Inc. into a paying position that was the springboard to success. In 1985, she moved to the Holiday Inn in Carlisle which led to a cooperative venture -Lodging in Carlisle. As the creative mind behind the venture, she managed the member hotels, prepared and oversaw budgets, and gave direction to marketing strategies. She opened and managed the Days Inn of Carlisle. One accomplishment was refurbishing and marketing of the Embers, now the Clarion Hotel. Throughout her tenure with the hotel industry, she consistently exceeded industry averages in occupancy rates, net profit and revenue.

In 2001, Lebo joined the Cumberland County Redevelopment Authority as director of economic development to expand and diversify the county's economy. She is the county liaison to the Pennsylvania Capital Regions Vacations Bureau and a member of CareerLink which helps dislocated workers whose companies are closing. Her marketing skills were used to develop a website and brochure on office services and demographic information.

She has been honored by Days Inns, the YMCA, the Pennsylvania Capital Regions Vacation Bureau, and in 1998 was named one of Pennsylvania's Best 50 Women in Business. She is active in community organizations ranging from those involving her two teenagers to Carlisle's Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and United Way.

Long is senior partner and senior municipal bond lawyer in the firm of Rhoads & Sinon L.L.P. in Harrisburg. In his practice, he routinely reviews and participates in the financing of revenue generating projects that include feasibility analysis, revenue forecasts, and tax-exempt and other financial structures. As bond counsel, Long practices before the Federal District Court for Pennsylvania's Middle District, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is an author, frequent lecturer and statutory draftsman in the area of municipal finance and serves on the American Bar Association's Committee on Tax-Exempt Finance. A former president of the student government at Shippensburg, he also distinguished himself at Dickinson Law School serving as the editor of the Law Review and as a member of the Moot Court Team which placed second in national competition.

As a member of the Shippensburg University Foundation Board of Directors, he was the chair of the Business Ventures Committee. The committee is responsible for researching and implementing business venture activities that generate additional revenue for the Foundation, where he played an important role in the acquisition of College Park and the building of the Stone Ridge Commons apartment complex adjacent to campus. He is presently the chair of the Foundation Financing Committee which will implement financing for Foundation projects.
