Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit
In February 2012, Shippensburg University was approved as a new member in the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CW-CESU). CESUs bring together scientists at academic and non-profit institutions with resource managers at participating federal agencies to work together on collaborative, applied projects across multiple disciplines. The CW-CESU is one of 17 CESUs that form a national network. As part of the CW-CESU, SU faculty and staff can now easily partner with federal agencies on funded projects that address immediate management or monitoring needs. SU is also working with the CW-CESU to develop an internship program.
The focus of the CW-CESU is to promote stewardship and integrated resource management of natural and cultural resources within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, which is home to more than 3,600 species and over 15 million people. SU is one of 24 research institutions and 9 federal agencies that comprise the CW-CESU. Federal agencies participating in the CW-CESU include the National Park Service, the Department of Defense, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Geological Survey, the USDA Forest Service, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. If you have current or prospective projects with collaborators at any of these agencies, the CW-CESU can facilitate and streamline funding arrangements. Project budgets can also stretch further, since CW-CESU projects limit the overhead rate to 15%.
Dr. Claire Jantz (Geography-Earth Science, email@example.com) is the CW-CESU point of contact at SU. Contact Dr. Jantz with any additional questions or to be included on an e-mail list to receive calls for interest from federal CW-CESU projects. All interested faculty are also invited to complete an application for inclusion in the CW-CESU expert database (see http://cesu.al.umces.edu/). This will allow federal partners with a need for your expertise to find you.
If you are a federal partner and want to learn more about SU’s areas of expertise, please see our About Shippensburg University fact sheet for the CW-CESU or review our application for membership.
