M.S. in Communication Studies
The Department of
Communication and Journalism at Shippensburg University offers a master’s
degree in the areas of strategic public relations and/or digital media.
The goal of the department is to provide graduate students with the opportunity
to refine and build skills necessary to excel in a professional working
environment. Curriculum is concentrated in areas such as mass communication
writing, web publishing, digital-print-electronic media, communication research
and analysis, and understanding of theories in law and ethics.
The degree is obtained
through completion of 30 credit hours with a minimal “B” average (3.0). The
department offers a flexible course of study and class sizes ranging from 12-20
students. In addition to core classes being offered on campus, the program also
offers classes online and at nearby institutions off campus. The department emphasizes the importance of internships and it offers students with a wide arrange of networking. This plays a vital role for potential employment opportunities for after graduation. All students are
required to demonstrate comprehension and skill learning by conducting a final
professional project in their concentrated area of study
(typically towards the
end of the program).
In addition to the Graduate Studies requirements,
the department requires:
- Three professional references
- 400-500 word essay explaining what you expect to gain by completing program
Applicants should have a bachelor’s
degree from a regionally
accredited college or university in a communication-related field and a cumulative grade point
average (GPA) of at least a 2.75. If applicants do not meet requirements, perquisite
courses may be required in addition to the required master’s degree courses.
