Author Dolen Perkins-Valdez raised provocative questions of power and freedom in her novel, Wench (2010) that follows the lives of four women who meet each year at a resort in Ohio for Southern white men who vacation there with their black slave mistresses. It is not until one woman talks of running away that things change. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, a graduate of Harvard, and a former University of California postdoctoral fellow, Perkins-Valdez lives in Washington, D.C. For information call 717-477-1738.
