J.R. Martinez Lecture

(part of the Proteus Lecture Series)

JRMartinezJ.R. Martinez’s life permanently changed in April 2003.  It was only a month into his deployment to Iraq in the United States Army, when the left front tire of the Humvee that he was driving hit a land-mine.  Martinez was trapped inside the burning vehicle and suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body.

J.R. spent 34 months in recovery and underwent 33 different surgeries including skin grafts and cosmetic surgery.  During his time in recovery, Martinez spoke to another burn victim, giving them strength and courage, which allowed Martinez to see the impact that he could have on other patients.  He decided that day to use his experience to help others.

Since then, J.R. has become a highly sought-after motivational speaker, traveling the country to spread his message of resilience and optimism.  He’s been featured in numerous print publications and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, 60 Minutes, and The View to name a few.

In 2008, J.R. stepped into the role of Brot Monroe, a combat veteran on ABC’s  All My Children.  J.R. is also a fan favorite on Dancing with the Stars, which he balances with speaking engagements and extensive charity work.
