How to Pay for College (college.gov)

COST OF ATTENDANCE

The bottom line for many families is estimating how much you will need to pay when the bill for college arrives. To determine this, you need two pieces of information. The amount you will be billed by the Student Accounts Office and the amount of Financial Assistance you are receiving from various sources of financial aid. (When the actual bill arrives from Student Accounts, your estimated financial aid will be deducted from the total charges, giving you the “net” amount due.) Student Accounts bills are based on your status as an in-state or out-of-state student, and based on whether you are living on campus or off campus.

Below, we have divided charges up into estimated billable charges (what Student Accounts would actually bill you for) and other non-billable expenses like books and transportation. Those non-billable costs are called “indirect” costs and we include them in your budget when we determine your eligibility for aid, but you don’t get billed for them.

Add up your total billable costs based on whether you are in-state or out-of-state, on campus or off campus. If you are out of state, and are eligible for the Out-of-State Tuition Advantage Program discount for high performing students, and students in STEM majors, you will want to factor in that your tuition rate will be lower.

Once you have determined your billable charges, you can then subtract out all sources of financial assistance. This may be federal loans and grants, state grants, scholarships you receive from Shippensburg (athletic, academic, etc.) and awards you may be receiving from other sources. Please remember, any outside sources of aid you receive need to be reported to the Financial Aid Office as they may affect your eligibility for federal financial aid. Your financial aid award can be viewed on your myShip Portal.
