About the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic comprises two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, with Haiti its neighbor to the west. The Dominican Republic is one of the poorest nations in the Caribbean; however, many Americans don't experience this side of the country, as they often see and experience the Dominican Republic as a tourist.

The Dominican Republic has many economic and social problems. On average, 80% of students don't get past the fifth grade, and 40 percent of 14- to 17-year-olds still attend elementary school. This lack of education leads to other problems such as illiteracy, lack of adequate employment, and lack of adequate housing.
