On November 17, 2009 the Honors Colloquium hosted Dominican Day to raise awareness of the class's service-learning project in the Dominican Republic. The event had two separate sessions in the Ceddia Union Building Multi-Purpose Room: an afternoon session for children from the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School who contributed school supplies to send to the Dominican Republic and an evening session for the campus community.

The night included dance lessons taught by Dr. José Ricardo of Shippensburg University's Modern Languages Department, Dominican-inspired food, and Dominican music. Attendees had the opportunity to learn Spanish words and phrases at a special station, make Dominican masks, and enjoy displays featuring the Dominican Republic's history and culture. Many of our contributors donated prizes for a raffle held at the end of the evening.

Results

Overall, Dominican Day was a great success! Over 30 students from the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School and over 150 members of the campus community attended the event and reported that they had a great time. The most successful stations throughout the day were the mask-making table, the Dominican food, and the Merengue lessons taught by Dr. Ricardo. The class was excited that so many people expressed interest in our project and wanted to learn more about the Dominican Republic. We thank our contributors and the various individuals that volunteered their time to make this such a wonderful day for everyone.
