Instructional Design and Consultation
Training, Orientation, and Workshops

What training does IDDS offer?

IDDS provides classes and consultations to faculty on a variety of software and technology topics. We are introducing online training this year so that you can learn software skills directly on your computer whether you're in your office or at home. Additionally we've added a few screencast/online videos. We'll be adding more screencasts as the semester progresses. If you don't see what you need, please fill out this  form . You can always contact us by phone and we'll be happy to help you (Shelley, x1816, Donna x3439 [off-campus 477-1123 x3439]!

What kind of topics do you cover?

We cover a number of different topics and software applications: [  Supported Software  ]

General Software Questions

There are times when you just want the instructions without spending an hour in class or having to walk to another building. You need to get the work done and fast.

Web 2.0 Questions

There has been a great deal of discussion concerning Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is the "next generation" of web development and design which is characterized as having a user-centric design that helps facilitate communication, collaboration and information sharing, and is web based. Examples of this next or second generation web are wikis (Wikipedia), blogs (Blogger) social-networking sites (Linked-in or Facebook) and video-sharing sites (Youtube).

Desire2Learn Questions

Desire2Learn is our current LMS or learning management system. A learning management system provides faculty with a secure area that allows an instructor to manage users and their roles, has features such as a course calendar, student messaging such as email, provides the instructor with the ability to upload course content, and assessment capabilities. Generally a LMS is designed for web-based or blended (face-to-face and online learning). Both novice and experienced Desire2Learn users will benefit from the information contained in this area.

Software Resources and Information

This area contains a listing of software packages that are commonly used by faculty to create case studies, screencasts (recording of your computer screen), or presentations. Learn more about software packages that you've heard about but are not sure what they can help you accomplish.

To inquire about topics that are not listed here, please fill out the  training request form .

Why should I take a training class?

It's a great way to expand your skill base in a friendly atmosphere.

How do I sign up for classes?

Faculty can sign up for classes online at training.ship.edu. If you're having any trouble, contact us at idds@ship.edu.

What if I don't see training I need on training.ship.edu?

We want to hear from you! If you need training and don't see it listed on training.ship.edu, please contact us directly (idds@ship.edu).

Where are classes held?

Our main training room is located on the lower level of the library. If you are interested in a departmental training session, we are happy to go to your department lab to conduct the class.

I have a question that isn't covered here. How do I contact you?

We're happy to answer any questions you may have, just email us at idds@ship.edu.
