Homepages

The course homepage is the first page that instructors and students see when entering a course. The typical course homepage is a page comprised of widgets that provide information and links to tools, courses, and personal settings.

All courses are initially set up with a default course homepage by the system administration. Use the Homepage Management tool to create a new homepage and set it as the active homepage for the course. Instructors can then, add or remove widgets, customize their appearance, and create custom widgets to expand the functionality of the course homepage.

Instructors can create a personal Homepage in D2L. A personal homepage allows instructors to share personal information, history, and interests with members of all classes. There are two ways to create a personal homepage: using D2L's HTML Editor, or by uploading an already-existing web page that was created using other web editing software.

Access the Homepages tool

  1. Click Edit Course on the course navigation bar, and selecting Homepages from the list of course administration tools.

Creating a Homepage: HTML Editor Option

This option is a two-step process--

(1) Create the HTML file

(2) Edit the Page.

The HTML Editor for homepages allows instructors to use both Design and HTML views to create the page. HTML view requires use of HTML code. For more information, refer to “A Summary of HTML Codes”.

  1. In the My Courses widget, click any course. The Course Home page appears.
  2. Click the Manage the homepages for the Org Unit button in the bottom right of the screen.
  3. Click the Create Homepage button. The Create Homepage pane appears.

  4. Enter a name and description for the homepage.
  5. To add a header for the homepage below the navbar, select the Include custom homepage header.
    1. Select Org Unit name to add the org unit name below the navbar.
    2. Select Custom to add a custom header.
  6. Choose between the following types of homepage options:
    1. Design a widget-based homepage: This displays a standard homepage with various widgets.
    2. Make an existing tool the homepage: This displays a system tool, such as Content, as the homepage.
    3. Make an existing URL the homepage: This displays a web page as the homepage.

  7. For a widget-based homepage, click Change Layout to change the homepage layout.
  8. Click Add Widgets to add widgets to your homepage.
  9. When finished, click Save and Close to save and return to the Create Homepage pane.
  10. To activate the new homepage, select the desired homepage from the Active Homepage drop-down list and click Apply.

Change the panel widths on your homepage:

  1. Click on the Change Layout button under Homepage type.
  2. Choose a layout to use for your homepage.
  3. Click on the Update button to confirm.

Add or move widgets on your homepage:

The Widget section enables instructors to add widgets to a homepage, move existing widgets to different homepage panels, change the widget display options and remove widgets from your homepage. When adding widgets to your homepage, ensure the width of the selected panel is sufficient for the widgets you want to display.

  1. Scroll down to the Widgets section on the Create/Edit Homepage pane.
  2. To add an existing widget to a panel, click the corresponding Add Widget button to display all widgets currently available for use in the homepage.
  3. Select the widgets to add to the homepage panel and click Add in the Add Widgets dialog box.
  4. Click on the Save button to apply the changes. (The widgets listed on the Add Widget page are dependent on the tools available for use within your organization and added to the current org unit.)
  5. Use Widget Context Menus to:
    • Move widgets to other panels.
    • Arrange the vertical placement of widgets.
    • Edit the display properties of widgets, such as border width, title bar color and Widget title.
    • Remove widgets from your homepage.

Viewing a Students' Homepage

  1. On the Course Home page navigation bar, click the Classlist option from the Communication drop-down list. The list of class members appears.
  2. Next to the student's name, click the View Homepage link. Homepage icon That student's homepage appears.

Deleting a Homepage

  1. In the My Courses widget, click any course. The Course Home page appears.
  2. Click on the Manage the homepages for the Org Unit button in the bottom right of the screen.
  3. Under the drop-down menu next to the file, click the Delete button A confirmation dialog box appears.
  4. Click OK. The homepage file is deleted.
