Drop-In Tutoring is now available in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing!

What is Drop-In Tutoring?

Drop-in tutoring is a flexible, casual way to get help without having to plan far in advance. Just stop by during the drop-in hours appointed for your subject, and tutors will be there to help. During drop-in times you might also find other students working on the same topics or assignments, which provides opportunities for social learning.

How do I make an appointment?

One of the great things about drop-in tutoring is that you don't need an appointment! As long as you visit us during the times appointed for your subject, you will benefit from the guidance of a tutor. Below you will find the drop-in hours for subjects currently available.

  • Biology: Every Sunday and Thursday from 5-9pm.
    Location: Franklin Science Center 356.
  • Chemistry: Every Sunday and Thursday from 5-9pm.
    Location: Franklin Science Center 356.
  • Writing: Every Thursday from 6-9pm.

  • Economics: Every Wednesday from 5:30-8:30.

Preparing for a Drop-In Tutoring session

You should prepare for a drop-in tutoring session in the same way that you would a regular tutoring appointment. Be sure to bring any materials that will make the session productive. Materials might include your textbook, the class syllabus, assignments, essay prompts, class notes, highlighters and pens.

What should I expect?

When you arrive at the designated location, you will be asked to sign in. There will be multiple tutors serving students at the same time. If many students need help in the same subject, your tutors might put you into a small group, where you will have the opportunity to work with other students on problem areas. The tutors will be available to answer any questions your group may have, and to help keep you focused and on task. Working with other students while under the supervision of a tutor allows you to hear concepts explained by several people, which aids in comprehension. It is also a perfect setting for social students who prefer to learn by speaking with others.

In some cases, you may end up working one on one with a tutor during drop-in hours, but please realize that during busy times this is simply not always possible. Tutors will do everything they can to assist you, and sometimes that means pairing or grouping you with others students dealing with the same subject matter.

When you are ready to end your session, you will be asked to fill out a feedback form. This only takes a moment and is extremely important for the Learning Center. We value your thoughts and opinions and often make changes based on your suggestions.
