 Group Tutoring

What is Group Tutoring?

The Learning Center offers Group Tutoring for students who enjoy studying in a collaborative environment. Groups are formed around a small number of students enrolled in the same course. The group determines the direction of each study session, and a tutor is present to keep the group focused and to address any problem areas.

Why participate in Group Tutoring?

Research shows that participation in study groups can yield the following benefits:

-Group discussions can expose students to a diversity of ideas and points of view that contribute to increased student comprehension of material.

-Students who actively participate in group discussion are likely to learn and retain more.

-Studying with others can be more enjoyable and intellectually stimulating than working independently.

-A study group can provide students with the support and motivation necessary to succeed.

How do I make a Group Tutoring appointment?

You might already know some students in your class who would be interested in forming a group. If this is the case, then you and your peers can call 717-477-1420 Monday through Thursday, 10am-9pm, or Sunday 5pm-9pm  for an appointment. Be sure to tell the receptionist that you would like group tutoring, and give him or her the names of all students in the group.

If you wish to participate in a group, but do not have one already established, just give us a call and we will try to match you with other students taking the same course.

Preparing for a Group Tutoring session

Make sure everyone in your group is prepared for your scheduled appointment by asking everyone to arrive on time. You should also bring along any materials that might aid in making your session productive. These materials might include textbooks, lecture notes, assignments, your syllabus, hand outs, pens and highlighters.

What if I have to cancel or reschedule?

Whether your whole group needs to cancel or reschedule, or you alone cannot make the designated time, please call us so that your tutor knows not to wait. If you find that you would rather have individual tutoring, or if you would like to join another group, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your requests.

What should I expect?

When your group arrives, please check in at the reception desk. The receptionist will direct you to your tutor. Your session might be held in the main tutoring area, or in a private study room. Wherever you end up, you will have access to a table and a whiteboard for writing or working problems. Your group will determine what areas to study during that session, and outline goals and expectations for the hour. The tutor will be there to help you reach your goals, to assist with problem areas, and to keep you focused and on task. After the session, your group and the tutor will discuss whether your goals were met. At this time, you might choose to schedule a follow-up visit. Your tutor can get you set up for another appointment before you even leave the Learning Center!
