Finding Articles for Exercise Science Research

The primary database of research articles with which you will be working is SportDiscus. Depending upon your topic you may need to use some of the following related databases

1. Full text Databases

  • SportDiscus with Full text  - SportDiscus is a comprehensive source for sports & sports medicine journals, providing full text for more than 415 journals. [Add the term Research (e.g., Strength Training and Research)]
  • MEDLINE - via EBSCOhost  - EBSCOHost's version of the National Library of Medicine's comprehensive life sciences and biomedical database, with abstracts for 15 million articles published worldwide and links to 650,000+ full-text articles
  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition  - Includes nearly 450 peer-reviewed journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. [Includes a medical dictionary]

2. Abstract Databases

  • Biological Abstracts 1998-Present  - A collection of citations covering life science and biomedical research literature published from more than 4,000 journals internationally. [Choosing Check Availability will allow you to find the article in another Ship database or order it from another Library.]
  • CINAHL  - An authoritative resource for nursing and allied health professionals and researchers. This database provides indexing for 1,835 journals. The database contains more than 1,000,000 records dating back to 1982 [Choosing Check Availability will allow you to find the article in another Ship database or order it from another Library.]

3. Other Helpful Services

  • Journal Title List  - a searchable list of all the journals to which Ship subscribes both digitally and in paper
  • InterLibraryLoan  - ILLiad - Articles not available in our databases can be ordered from ILLiad
  • WorldCat.org - This is the mother of all library databases. If a book has been published it's in here. Books owned by Ship are tagged as in our Library.
  • Ship catalog  - Books in Ship Library.
  • EZ-Borrow  [PALCI] - a cooperative catalog for borrowing books from 50+ academic libraries in Pennsylvania and the region, including Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania libraries.
