Public institute service director retires; interim director appointed

Dr. Thomas E. Enderlein, executive director for Shippensburg University's Institute for Public Service and Sponsored Programs, retired Jan. 2 after nearly 22 years of service to the University.

Enderlein joined Shippensburg in 1987 and has been involved in directing the Institute's several centers as well as serving as the University's research administrator responsible for all grants and serving as the director of international education.

"Tom has spent his entire professional career in education as a faculty member, in higher education administration and as an education advocate in the U.S. Department of Education," said University President William N. Ruud. "Thanks to Tom's expertise and guidance, the Institute was able to help the University navigate various funding opportunities and comply with constantly changing federal regulations. His support and wisdom will be missed by all of us who have had the privilege to work with him."

According to Dr. Barbara G. Lyman, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, "During his tenure at Shippensburg, Dr. Enderlein helped our faculty obtain grants and other funds to enhance both their professional development and their opportunities to conduct research, especially joint projects with our students. His hard work and dedication to Shippensburg were important factors in our ability to provide students with a nationally recognized education of excellence."

Dr. Tony Winter has accepted the position as interim executive director of the institute. He has served nine years as the associate dean and also directed the Business Intern Program for the John L. Grove College of Business. His extensive administrative experience also includes having served two years as the interim dean of extended studies and previously, within the College of Business, serving as the assistant dean, assistant to the dean, assistant director for the Frehn Center for Management, and as acting dean for a semester.

He is active in many local, state and national organizations and committees. He has presented at numerous professional association meetings and has published in various professional journals.

Enderlein earned his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, from which he also earned his master's and bachelor's degrees. He also was a Fulbright Scholar and traveled to Germany as well as participated in a number of other post-doctoral programs in education or management. Immediately prior to coming to Shippensburg, he was staff assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education and coordinator of the Secretary's Discretionary Fund. He is also involved in the local community serving, or having served, as a member of various groups including the Shippensburg Area School District board of directors. He was also a founding member and board member of the Shippensburg Downtown Organization Investing Together.
