University events to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MLKA series of events, including panel discussions, educational programs and the 21st Annual March for Humanity, will highlight Shippensburg University's 13th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. The theme is "Continue the Dream."

The celebration will center on events Jan. 19 and 20, with the annual march set for Jan. 22. The university will be closed Jan. 19 as part of the national celebration of Dr. King's birthday.

Events Jan. 19 include breakfast in Kriner Hall at 8:30 a.m., a pastoral panel beginning at 9 a.m. in Kriner, and community youth workshops/activities that will include a cultural Jeopardy game and dance instruction. The celebratory luncheon is begins at noon in Kriner and will include various speakers and entertainment by local and university choirs.

The interactive display, "A Civil Rights Experience," is Jan. 19 and 20 and will be in the Ceddia Union Building. This exhibit provides the viewer a glimpse of what it was like to grow up during the civil rights movement by depicting prominent events and struggles faced during that period.

A luncheon is planned beginning at noon Jan. 20. That day will also include the opportunity to watch the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. The H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center will open at 11 a.m. for people to watch the day's events. All members of the campus community and the public are invited to attend the event hosted by the Office of Social Equity and the Luhrs Center. Hot beverages, such as hot cider and hot chocolate, will be served by SU alumni.

The university's Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and the African American Organization will host the March for Humanity beginning at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in the multipurpose room of the Ceddia Union Building. The theme of the march is "The Dream Continues." The march is an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity and concern for humanity. For more information, call the office at 477-1616.
