Area students participate in university's annual math/computer day
Students from area high schools earned honors during the recent Computer Programming Contest, Math Contest and Math Quiz Bowl held as part of Shippensburg University’s annual Math/Computer Day.
The event, held since 1958, is sponsored by the mathematics and computer science departments in conjunction with the Math Club and Programming Team. The contest is for high school juniors. A total of 63 students from 12 schools participated in the day’s events.
Susquenita High School won the Computer Programming Contest followed by Lewistown High School and West Perry High School. Members of the Susquenita team were Nick Mettzo, Nicholas Lacroce and Austen Williams. Members of the Lewistown team were Kyle Birch, Jon Knepp and Anthony Frock. Members of the West Perry team were Nick Roman, Ian Bond and Ian Switaj.
The individual winner of the Math Contest was Scott Steinmetz of Hempfield Senior High School. Danielle Schleig of Northeastern High School placed second, and Andrew Hofman of Cedar Crest High School placed third.
The Math Quiz Bowl was won by Hempfield Senior High School, followed by Central Dauphin High School in second place and Lewistown High School placing third. Members of the winning Hempfield team were Scott Steinmetz, Lydia Brighton and Frank Lee. Members of the Central Dauphin team were Sudarshan Gopaladesihan, Ghazi Wasi, Benjamin Vehabovic and Riju Gupta. Members of the Lewistown team were Valerie Hagans, Alex Rhodes, Lauren Valdivia and Levi Miller.
The first place teams received trophies. First, second and third place individual winners received trophies and cash prizes. All participants received certificates.
