other achievements by or to Shippensburg University faculty and other members

Dr.
STEVEN B. BURG, associate
professor of history, was interviewed by a reporter from Wisconsin Public Radio
about the impact of the 1918 influenza epidemic on Wisconsin. The interview
will air in September as part of a series comparing the Influenza Pandemic of
1918 and the current H1N1 outbreak.
Dr. MU-SHENG CHANG, associate professor of finance, presented the paper "Characteristics of U.S. Self-Insurers for Workers' Compensation Losses" at the
2009 annual meeting of the American Risk and Insurance Association in
Providence, R.I., Aug. 2 to 5.
Dr.
THOMAS C. CROCHUNIS, assistant
professor of English, presented "What are Teachers' Roles and Responsibilities
in Assuring That Our Students are Prepared?" at the Pennsylvania School Board
Association's Symposium on Education Issues for School Board Members in
Gettysburg July 12.
Dr.
VIET T. DAO, associate professor
of management information systems, presented the paper "The Battle for
Dominance: Innovating Firms' Strategic Market Signaling Behavior and Its Impacts
on Business Success in the Context of a Standards War" at the 15th Americas
Conference on Information Systems in San Francisco Aug. 6 to 9. The paper was
also included in the conference proceedings.
Dr. BARBARA DENISON, associate professor of sociology, presented "Intergenerational Leadership from a Cultural Competency Perspective" at the
annual Officers Professional Development Seminar for the 193rd Special
Operations Wing, Pennsylvania Air National Guard in September at Fort
Indiantown Gap.
Drs.
KURT FUELLHART and GEORGE
POMEROY, professors of
geography-earth science, participated in the Tenth Asian Urbanization
Conference in Hong Kong. Fuellhart presented the paper "Assessment of U.S.
Asian Air Travel on United Airlines through the Analysis of the Availability of
Upgrade and Award Tickets." Pomeroy presented the paper "Pollution Parameters
in Asian Cities" and also helped organized the conference as the chair of the
Asian Urbanization Research Association, the sponsoring committee.
Dr. KURT FUELLHART, professor of geography, was named to the "Task Force
to Study Carlisle Airport" along with nine other area business, community and
development leaders. The group will investigate whether there are opportunities
to better integrate the airport into the fabric of the region's economy.
Dr.
SHIRLEY HESS, associate professor
of counseling and college student personnel, co-authored the article "Therapist
training, feedback, and practice for dream work: A pilot study" published in
the most recent issue of Psychological Reports.
Drs. MISTY L. KNIGHT and RICHARD A. KNIGHT, assistant professors of human communication studies,
co-authored the article "Finger-Pointing and Federal Agencies: Examining the
Shift in Rhetorical Riposte between Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ike"
published in the Fall 2009 issue of the Louisiana Communication Journal.
Dr. IAN M. LANGELLA, associate professor of supply chain management,
recently reviewed an article on sustainable procurement for the journal Information
& Organization. He also was recently offered and accepted a position on the
editorial board for the Journal of Hospitality Management and Tourism.
Dr.
DALE G. MERKLE, professor emeritus,
received the Champions for Equality Award for the Atlanta PFLAG Chapter from
Georgia Equality for his "Safe Schools" work, a program designed to reduce
bullying and harassment based on perceived differences.
Dr.
William Oberman, associate
professor of management, was selected to receive the 2009 Marlow Froke
Outstanding Publication Award from the Association for Continuing Higher
Education for the article "Discovering Paths to Building Social Capital:
Complex Campus Community Linkages in Continuing Higher Education" he
co-authored that was published in the Fall 2008 edition of the Journal of
Continuing Higher Education.
Dr.
JOSÉ RICARDO, assistant professor
of foreign language education and Spanish, facilitated the colloquy "When
Theory and Practice Collide: Reconciling Methods Content with Student Teaching
Practice" at the National Summer Conference for Professional Development
Schools at Penn State University Park July 9 to 11.
Dr. CHRISTINE ROYCE, associate professor in teacher education, recently
took office as the Professional Development Division Director for the National
Science Teachers Association. As a board member, she will represent NSTAs
membership for all matters relating to professional development and serves as
the liaison between NTSA and the National Science Educational Leadership
Association (NSELA). In this capacity she has also been asked to serve as the
board member to the NSTA Strategic Planning Task Force. In addition, she also
participated in the Summer Leadership Institute sponsored by NSELA in Portland,
Maine this summer. The institute focused on "A Standards and Research-Based
Approach to Leading Professional Learning" and she served as a reviewer to the
NSF supported facilitator's guide for this program.
Dr.
BILL RUUD, president, chaired the
session "Leader-Member Exchange" in the Organizational Behavior Division of the
2009 Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Chicago Aug. 7 to 11.
Dr.
ROBERT SHAFFER, associate
professor of history, presented the paper "A Japanese Christian's 1936 Tour of
the U.S.: Inverting the Missionary Enterprise?" at the annual conference in June
of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C.
He also provided commentary on the panel "Teaching Research in the
Secondary Classroom."
Dr.
PATTI WOLF, assistant dean of the
John L. Grove College of Business, was co-author of the chapter "Blogging in
Higher Education" that was accepted for publication in the book Blogs and
Blogging: Types, Impact and Future Directions.
The
John L. Grove College of Business has accepted editorial responsibilities for
the ABD Journal, an official
publication of the Academy of Business Disciplines. Dr. JOANNE TUCKER will serve as the executive editor-in-chief and Dr. GARY
ARMSTRONG will serve as associate
executive editor-in-chief. The journal's mission is to publish quality
pedagogical applications, applied and pure research papers and invited
editorials in all areas of business.
