University to
host parents and family celebration, 9/11 vigil
Shippensburg University will expand its annual parents and
family day celebration into a three-day program that features a fund-raising
event for a local food bank and a candlelight vigil in honor of the ninth
anniversary of the terrorists' attacks in 2001.
The theme of the celebration Sept. 11 to 13 is "Come Sail
Away."
The vigil will begin at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 11 on the rear lawn of the Ceddia
Union Building (CUB). The event is open to the campus community and the public.
From 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 will be "Shippensburg's Best!
Pizza" in the CUB lounges. During the program local pizzerias will showcase
their pizzas and compete for votes on which has the best pizza in Shippensburg.
Tickets for the event are $3 per person with all proceeds going to Kings Kettle
Food Bank. The event is also open to the community as well as the campus
community and parents.
Other events during the celebration include tours of the
Little Red Schoolhouse on campus, a display of military and civilian fashion in
the Fashion Archives and Museum, a presentation at Dibert Planetarium, an open
meeting with university President Bill Ruud, the football game against Lock
Haven, a buffet dinner for students and their families, and a performance by
magician and illusionist Mike Super in the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center.
