University to host parents and family celebration, 9/11 vigil

Shippensburg University will expand its annual parents and family day celebration into a three-day program that features a fund-raising event for a local food bank and a candlelight vigil in honor of the ninth anniversary of the terrorists' attacks in 2001.

The theme of the celebration Sept. 11 to 13 is "Come Sail Away."

The vigil will begin at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 11 on the rear lawn of the Ceddia Union Building (CUB). The event is open to the campus community and the public.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 will be "Shippensburg's Best! Pizza" in the CUB lounges. During the program local pizzerias will showcase their pizzas and compete for votes on which has the best pizza in Shippensburg. Tickets for the event are $3 per person with all proceeds going to Kings Kettle Food Bank. The event is also open to the community as well as the campus community and parents.

Other events during the celebration include tours of the Little Red Schoolhouse on campus, a display of military and civilian fashion in the Fashion Archives and Museum, a presentation at Dibert Planetarium, an open meeting with university President Bill Ruud, the football game against Lock Haven, a buffet dinner for students and their families, and a performance by magician and illusionist Mike Super in the H.
