Fashion Archives and Museum to host textile conservation workshop
Shippensburg University's Fashion Archives and Museum has a received a grant of more than $11,000 from the Richmond Trust that will be used to benefit the collection and the local community.
Colleen Callahan, a nationally-known textile conservator, will teach a series of textile conservation, care and exhibition workshops during the week of November 9 to 13. Since the grant pays her fee, attendance at the workshops will be free to participants and invitations have already been sent out to members of the campus community as well as local museums and historical societies with textile and costume collections.
During her programs, Callahan will conserve some key pieces in the Fashion Archives collection including an 1803 wedding veil with local provenance, an 1825 wedding dress and two men's frock coats from the 1830s. These items will be on display in their conserved and stabilized state during the spring exhibit Nineteenth-Century Costume Treasures of the Fashion Archives and Museum.
That exhibit will have its sneak preview opening Feb. 4, 2010, and its grand 30th anniversary gala opening Feb. 6, 2010.
