Accomplishments of SU faculty, employees

Following is a list of presentations, awards, honors and other achievements by or to Shippensburg University faculty and other members of the campus community. If you need further information, please call 477-1202.

  • Dr. KWABENA AKURANG-PERRY, professor of history, recently published "Revisiting Decolonization in Guinea" in African Studies Review. He also authored the following forthcoming articles: "Feminization of Social Inequality: From Slavery to Involuntary Female Domestic Labor in Ghana" in International Labor and Working-Class History; and "Through the Lens of the Western Media: Hegemonizing the CIA-Induced Military Overthrow of 'Communist' President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana in 1966" in Regime Change and Succession Politics in Africa.
  • Dr. APRIL BAILEY, assistant professor of accounting/MIS, co-authored the article "Using Action Research to Understand Adult Business Students' Transition to an Undergraduate Program: Dissertation Findings" presented the paper Nov. 6 at the 11th Annual Academy of Business Disciplines Conference of in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. The refereed paper was also accepted by the academy and will be published in the proceedings in early spring 2010. This research was made possible by the Dale Kann Research Grant.  Bailey also served as a session chairperson at the conference.
  • Dr. WENDY S. BECKER, associate professor of management and marketing, Dr. JERRY A. CARBO III, associate professor of management and marketing; and Dr. IAN M.  LANGELLA, associate professor of supply chain management collaborated on the article "Beyond Self-Interest: Integrating Social Responsibility and Supply Chain Management With Human Resource Development" that will be published in the 2010 Volume 9, Issue 2 of Human Resource Development Review. This research integrates theory in a multi-paradigm view of corporate social responsibility.
  • Dr. WILLIAM L. BLEWETT, professor of geography-earth science, published the interpretative guidebook "Understanding Ancient Shorelines in the National Parklands of the Great Lakes." The report was published by the National Park Service and was an outgrowth of his recent work as a "Geoscientist-in- the-Park" at Michigan's Pictured Rocks and Wisconsin's Apostle Island National Lakeshores.
  • Dr. DALE BLUMAN, professor of human communication studies, had his article "Reflections on the Tamarisk Tree" published in Resolutions, the quarterly newsletter of the Supreme Court of Virginia, Division of Dispute Resolution. The article was a result of his recent trip to Israel in preparation for writing a book on medication during his upcoming sabbatical leave.   • Dr. PHILIP BROYLES, associate professor of sociology & anthropology, and Shippensburg alumnus Weston (Trent) Fenner, had their paper "Race, Human Capital, and Wage Discrimination in the STEM professions in the United States" accepted for publication in the International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy.
  • Dr. JENNIFER CLEMENTS, assistant professor of social work and gerontology, presented "Getting Beyond the Brady Bunch: Working with Reconstituted Families" at the 19th Annual Buildin Strong Families Conference Oct. 22 at Messiah College. She was also accepted to present at the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children's 18th Annual Colloquium in June 2010 in New Orleans. Her presentation is "Challenging the Burnout Myth: Resiliency and retention in long term child welfare workers."
  • Dr. ALISON DAGNES, associate professor of political science, and Honors students Grace Burkholder and Annamarie McCormick presented "Promoting Civic Engagement across Campus: The Honors Election Debate Series" at the 44th Annual Conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council in Washington, D.C. They discussed the Election Debate Series as a biennial event where Honors Elections Seminar students debate political candidates" positions on public policy issues in a forum open to the campus and community.
  • KAREN DANIEL, assistant professor in Lehman Library, was chosen to participate in a panel discussion on mentoring at the fall meeting of the Associated College Libraries of Central Pennsylvania where she shared her experiences mentoring interns from the history department in the SU Archives.
  • Dr. MARITA FLAGLER, assistant professor of social work and gerontology, co-presented the paper "No Sophie's Choice: Helping Families Who Have Members with Disabilities Live Morally Fulfilling Lives" at the 19th Annual Building Strong Families Conference Oct. 22 at Messiah College. 
  • Dr. LIZ FISHER, associate professor of social work and gerontology, had her article "Motivation and leadership in social work management: A review of theories and related studies" published in the journal Administration in Social Work.
  • TOM GIBBON, assistant professor academic services, presented "Developing Self-regulation Skills in Developmental Students on Academic Probation" at the 2009 College Reading and Learning Association Conference in Richmond, Va., Oct. 29.
  • Dr. DAVID E. KALIST, associate professor of economics, had his coauthored manuscript "Immigration and Nurses" accepted for publication in Industrial Relations, which the ISI Journal Citation Reports ranks first among all industrial relations and labor journals.
  • DR. KIM KLEIN, associate professor of history and Honors Program director, was a facilitator for City as Text Explorations at the 44th Annual Conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council in Washington, D.C. She also presented "Promoting Civic Engagement across Campus: The Honors Election Debate Series" and was a consultant for other Honors Programs.
  • Dr. IAN M. LANGELLA, associate professor of supply chain management recently completed review of a business statistics textbook for Prentice Hall.
  • Dr. MIKE LONG, assistant professor of mathematics, and Honors student Shaun Thompson presented "The Game: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Math, History, and Service-Learning" at the 44th Annual Conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council in Washington, D.C. They discussed an innovative Honors Program interdisciplinary seminar in which students traced the evolution of mathematics and created math tricks and games for middle school students in Appalachia.
  • BEN MEYER, assistant professor in exercise science, recently delivered an invited verbal presentation at the annual conference of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sport Medicine in Harrisburg.  His talk was "Examining the organismic, task, & environmental constraints on human performance."
  • Dr. RANDALL A. PELLOW, professor emeritus of teacher education and alumnus William Bucher had the second edition of their Western Hemisphere textbook published recently. Pellow also won the championship of Shippensburg inaugural racquetball tournament at the ShipRec center Oct. 24.
  • President BILL RUUD and JUDY RUUD had their co-authored article "Business Ethics Across the Curriculum From the Inside Out: A Student-Driven Approach" appear in the spring issue of Journal of Business Cases and Application.
  • Dr. JONATHAN SKAFF, associate professor of history, presented the papers "Sui-Tang Diplomatic Protocol as Eurasian Ritual" recently at the T'ang Studies Conference at the University of Albany and "Sui-Tang and Türk Propaganda Wars: A Case Study of the Circulation of Ideas in Medieval Eastern Eurasia," in October at the Global Asias Conference at Penn State. Also in October, he served as a panel commentator at the Textiles as Money Workshop at Yale University.
  • Dr. RICHARD D. STONE, professor of management and marketing, co-authored and co-presented the paper "Prelude to Vicksburg: Overlooked Battlefields of the Vicksburg Campaign" at the Annual Meeting of the Pennsylvania Geographic Society in West Chester Oct. 24.
  • Dr. THOMAS G. WHISENAND, associate professor of management information systems, has been selected for the advanced grade of Senior Member in the Association for Computing Machinery in recognition of his professional accomplishments.
  • STEPHANIE ANDERSON WITMER, assistant professor of communications/journalism and internship coordinator, was interviewed recently on Sirius Satellite Radio's program "Morning Living Live" on the Martha Stewart Living Radio Service about her book Killer Pies.
  • Drs. WILLIAM A. "TURI" BRAUN, SALLY A PAULSON, RUSSELL E. ROBINSON and JOOHEE IM SANDERS of the exercise science department, participated in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sport Medicine annual conference in Harrisburg with 17 undergraduate exercise science major students. Six students presented undergraduate-faculty research projects at the conference, four oral presentations and two poster presentations. I.; Nicole Eastep presented "Effects of Newly Designed Shinfins vs. Foot Fins on Swimming Performance in College Females," co-investigators: Yoder, K., Donovan, K., Barley, D., & Paulson, S.; William Humes presented "Effect of Various Warm-up Strategies on Anaerobic Performance in Female Lacrosse Athletes," co-investigators:  Shrader, S., Kopicki, K, Geesaman, T., & Paulson, S.; and Amanda Wade presented "Effects of an Employee-Based Walking Program on Selected Physical Fitness Measures," co-investigators: Paulson, S., Robinson, R., Haas, D., & Sipes, D.
