Area students participate in university's Math/Computer Day

Students from area high schools earned honors during the recent Computer Programming Contest, Math Contest and Math Quiz Bowl held as part of Shippensburg University's annual Math/Computer Day.
The event for high school juniors, held since 1958, is sponsored by the mathematics and computer science departments in conjunction with the Math Club and Programming Team. Highlights of the day are the math contest, the Math Quiz Bowl and the computer programming contest.
The individual winner of the math contest was Jason Killian of Hempfield High School. Shuxin Zhan, also of Hempfield High School, was second and Vikram Patwardhan of Cumberland Valley High School was third.
The Cumberland Valley High School team won the Quiz Bowl followed by Lower Dauphin High School in Second and Hempfield High School in third. Cumberland Valley team members were Vicki Chou, Justin Heckelman, Subramanian Iyar and Vikram Patwardhan. Lower Dauphin team members were Charles Davis, Kyle Stauffer, Chris Wagoner and Ben Welkie. Hempfield High team members were Michael Deeh, Jason Killian, Sam Smith and Shuxin Zhan.
West Perry High School's team won the computer programming contest followed by the team from Carlisle High School in second and the team from Elizabethtown High School in third. West Perry team members are Nick Roman, Ian Switaj and Logan Dean. Carlisle High team members are Stephen Bussey, Kevin Charlton and Michael Oplinger. Elizabethtown High team members are Andrew Kline, Aaron Cerke and Alaina Herkelman.
The first place teams received trophies. First, second and third place individual winners received trophies and cash prizes. All participants received certificates.
