Shippensburg University to rededicate fountain June 2
Approximately 116 years after it was dedicated, the fountain
in front of Old Main at Shippensburg University will be rededicated June 2.
The ceremony at 4 p.m. is open to the public and celebrates the renovation and repair
of the fountain originally dedicated in 1896 as a gift from that graduating
class.
In late
January, the fountain was disassembled, crated and taken to Robinson Iron in
Alabama for repair. The fountain has undergone regular painting and maintenance
since it was first installed, and was renovated in the early 1960s.
A team
of companies oversaw the restoration with Kreilick Conservation LLC of Orland,
PA taking the lead. The conservation company is partnering with Robinson Iron
and Outerspaces, a Pennsylvania-based landscape architectural firm. The project
included putting down new concrete, relaying some of the original stones and
then constructing a new basin.
The celebration is part of the university's Alumni Weekend 2012 May
31 to June 3 .
“Destination
SHIP” is the theme of this year’s program that will include “What
Happened In Ship...Stayed In Ship,” an exhibit of university-related artifacts from
the 1870s to the present, ArtSHIP art and wine festival, wedding vow renewals,
and a performance by Cornell
Gunter’s Coasters, Bobby Hendrick’s Drifters and The Platters at the H. Ric
Luhrs Performing Arts Center.
