University to
host forum on science and religion Oct. 4
Shippensburg
University will host its Fifth Annual Forum on Science and Religion Oct. 4. In connection
with the forum, a faculty member will give a presentation on the topic Oct. 2
in Carlisle.
Both events are
free and open to the public.
The annual
event on campus is at 7 p.m. in Orndorff Theatre in the Ceddia Union Building.
It will feature a showing of the documentary Wake Up Darkness hosted by its filmmaker, Israel Kacyvenski. He addresses issues of science and religion
through a combination of his personal background coupled with interviews with
prominent scientists, philosophers and theologians. Kacyvenski will answer
questions as part of the presentation.
On Oct. 2, Dr.
Joseph Shane, chair of the university’s chemistry department and founder of the
forum, will give a presentation at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on the
square in Carlisle. The presentation is titled Beyond Evolution: An
Introduction to the Historical Interactions Between Science and Religion. He
developed his presentation and the forum after the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area
School Board trial.
