December was 8th warmest on record
December’s average temperature was 38.1 degrees, the eighth warmest,
according to Dr.
Timothy W. Hawkins, professor and graduate program coordinator in Shippensburg
University’s geography-earth science department.
In
addition, Hawkins said, 2012 “ended
up as the second warmest year ever in Shippensburg since measurements began in
1933. The average temperature was 55.3 degrees. The warmest year was
1998 with an average temperature of 55.9 degrees. While numbers have not been
released yet, it is likely that 2012 will be one of the warmest, if not the
warmest year ever, for both the U.S. and the planet since measurements have
been recorded.”
For December, the monthly precipitation was 3.97 inches, the
22nd wettest. Monthly snowfall totaled 9.7 inches, the 24th snowiest.
