Run/walk Nov. 2 to raise money for student service project

United Campus Ministry (UCM) of Shippensburg University will host a fund-raising 5K Run/Walk For Peace Nov. 2 to support its planned service trip to Vietnam.

Proceeds from the event will help fund 12 Shippensburg University students and alumni to travel to rural Vietnam later this year. While there, they will work with volunteers from Vietnam YMCA to help build a much-needed school.

UCM is an inter-denominational Christian organization that has for more than 45 years organized a range of spiritual and service projects with Shippensburg University students. The Rev. Jan Bye, United Campus minister, provides students with spiritual and leadership opportunities in Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Vietnam. According to Bye, “We’ve been traveling to Vietnam every two or three years with groups of Shippensburg students for over 12 years. For most students, the cultural and spiritual experiences of this service trip are life-changing.”

UCM is housed at the Cora I. Grove Spiritual Center adjacent to campus. “Part of the learning process for students is discovering ways to raise money for service work,” said Bye. “This year’s group of students have come up with a fun day celebrating peace and good health by organizing this 5K run/walk on the university campus.”

Participants can pre-register at website or at the Ceddia Union Building Great Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 28 through Nov. 1.

The Nov. 2 event begins with sign-in and registration at 7:30 a.m. at the Student Recreation Pavilion. The 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Registration is $15 prior to the event or $20 with a T-shirt. All proceeds will pay for transportation to Vietnam or educational materials for Vietnamese children.

UCM is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
