Presentation Nov. 14 to discuss Native American boarding schools, sports

A Shippensburg University faculty member will present “Sports, Assimilation, and Resistance at Boarding Schools for Native Americans” Nov. 14.Bloom

Dr. John Bloom, associate professor of history and philosophy, will give the presentation at 6:30 p.m. in Grove Hall 101. The program, sponsored by the university’s Ethnic Studies Program, is free and open to the public.

His talk is based on his book To Show What an Indian Can Do. While the Carlisle Indian School produced some of the greatest athletes in the world, less well known are Native Americans who attended boarding schools in other parts of the United States for whom sports were a significant source of identity and pride.
