Nov. 14 to discuss Native American boarding schools, sports
Shippensburg University faculty member will present “Sports, Assimilation, and Resistance
at Boarding Schools for Native Americans” Nov. 14.
John Bloom, associate professor of history and philosophy, will give the
presentation at 6:30 p.m. in Grove Hall 101. The program, sponsored
by the university’s Ethnic Studies Program, is free and open to the public.
talk is based on his book To Show What an
Indian Can Do. While the Carlisle Indian School produced some of the greatest
athletes in the world, less well known are Native Americans who attended
boarding schools in other parts of the United States for whom sports were a significant
source of identity and pride.
