Ship among the nation’s best in return on investment for students

Shippensburg University ranks among the top universities in the nation for return on investment by students and is the top in Pennsylvania., a research company, ranked more than 1,300 colleges and universities based on total cost and alumni earnings as part of its 2014 College ROI Report. Shippensburg had an 8.1 percent annual return on investment (ROI) for in-state students without financial aid and a 10 percent ROI if financial aid is included.

Both ROIs are the best in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education system and ranks Shippensburg as the best in Pennsylvania for students without financial aid. It also ranks among the top in Pennsylvania for students with financial aid.

According to, the annual ROI analyzes the difference in career earnings of college graduates and how much they spent on the cost of attending college including tuition, room and board, books and supplies. It then compares that figure to how much one would earn if they had invested the cost of attending college into the stock market or bonds and started working immediately following high school.

The company found that over the course of the 20 years following graduation Shippensburg alumni who did not receive financial aid would have earned an average of $307,600 more than if they had not attended the university.

“We’ve said for years that Shippensburg University provides an excellent value in terms of the level of education our students receive for the amount of money that they are investing in their tuition,” said Dr. Brendan Finucane, professor and chair of the economics department. “This research is just confirming that.”
