Ship to compete in 2017 Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge
Shippensburg University’s Geography/Earth Science Department is challenging friends, colleagues, alumni and local residents to get outside during the 2017 Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge, beginning Sept. 18. This annual challenge encourages everyone to be active and connect with nature.
Ship will compete against more than 90 colleges from across the country, logging points over a four-week period for various outdoor activities, including hiking, bird watching, gardening and even relaxing in a hammock. Last year Ship placed eighth out of 89 colleges.
“Research shows that people are retracting from outdoor experiences, and it is negatively impacting their health and connection to the environment. This challenge aims to change that,” said Dr. Sean Cornell, associate professor of geography/earth science.
The challenge runs from Sept. 18 to Oct. 15. Participants download the challenge app, select a school to support and submit their outdoor activities through the app. Participants will also accumulate points for prizes. Eligible activities are outdoor based, and last at least 30 minutes. The entire Shippensburg community is encouraged to participate.
