The Pennsylvania Alliance for Geographic Education
The Pennsylvania Alliance for Geographic Education works in conjunction with the National Geographic Education Foundation to promote geographic literacy in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Alliance joined the nationwide Alliance initiative in 1988 thanks to efforts by then Governor Robert P. Casey and NGS Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor. The inspiration behind the Alliance movement was to develop a grassroots organization of professional geographers and teachers to encourage both geographic skills and appreciation as well as inspire people to care about the planet.
Giant Traveling Map of North America Visited PA February 22 - March 15, 2012

The State Museum of Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Alliance for Geographic Education, exhibited the National Geographic Giant Map of North America February 22 through March 15, 2012. On this huge 26’ x 35’ map – half the size of a basketball court – students and visitors alike had the opportunity to traverse the continent from Alaska’s Aleutian Islands to the Panama Canal and from Iceland to Baja in their stocking feet. Designed to promote geographic literacy by igniting interest in geography, the maps and accompanying activities incorporated physical movement and games to teach students place names, physical geography, cultural geography as well as map reading skills. To complement the giant map and bring regional context to its presentation, The State Museum also displayed large reproductions of historic Pennsylvania maps from the Pennsylvania State Archives.
