NAME: Jackie Maguire
HOMETOWN: Richboro, PA
FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG:
I think the best part of Shippensburg is the small class sizes. It makes it so easy to talk to professors when you are struggling or need clarification. Ultimately, it is one of the most important tools for success.
TWO INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME:
I have been in 31 of the 50 U.S. states, and I love going to the beach.
MY FRIENDS AT SHIP:
I was able to make friends through living in the dorms freshman year, my classes, tutoring, and activities I have participated in on campus. There are so many different clubs and organizations at Ship so it makes it easy to constantly meet new people.
I am a member of the Honors Program, and am currently serving as treasurer. I am also a chemistry and math tutor at the University’s Learning Center.
I receive the Board of Governor’s scholarship annually. This has allowed me to complete my undergraduate career debt free. I cannot thank Shippensburg University enough for providing affordable educational opportunities.
STUDENT RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
I participated in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates at Texas A&M University during the summer of 2012. I studied an organic reaction using computational techniques. This highly competitive program allowed me to not only gain valuable research experience, but also network with other chemists and to learn what life is like as a graduate student.
MOST MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT SHIP:
The Chemistry Department is extremely small and I think that has been the most meaningful experience for me at Shippensburg. It allowed me to excel in my major and learn more than I ever could have at a larger university.
COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
I participate in community service opportunities organized by the Honors Program.
WHAT I DO FOR FUN:
Most of all, I spend my free time with friends and family.
MY PLANS AFTER GRADUATION:
I plan to attend graduate school with hopes that furthering my education will allow me to get a job working in a chemistry research lab.
