Nathan's Story
NAME: Nathan Barr
HOMETOWN: Camp Hill, PA
MAJOR: Exercise Science
FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHIPPENSBURG:
The small class sizes provide great teacher-student relationships.
TWO INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME:
I help my father work on his race car during the weekends and one of my life-long goals is to own a motor yacht.
CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS/SPORTS/ACTIVITIES:
Honors Program, Honors Student Organization, Exercise Science Club
SCHOLARSHIP:
Shirley Fry Fox Scholarship, Shippensburg University Foundation Scholarship, and the Shippensburg University Alumni Scholarship. These scholarships have allowed me to focus less on costs and more on making the most out of my time at Shippensburg. Without these scholarships, I would not have been able to pursue as many opportunities or invest as much energy during my time at Shippensburg.
INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE:
CPRS Physical Therapy in the Spring of 2012. As part of my major, all students must conduct an internship in an exercise related field. During my internship, I would practice my exercise prescription skills in their wellness facility while shadowing physical therapy.
STUDENT RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
Last spring, I conducted group research on the effects of music tempo on cardiorespiratory variables (heart rate, blood pressure, frequency of breaths, ect.) during submaximal aerobic exercise under the supervision of Dr. Joohee Sanders and Dr. Turi Braun. Currently, I am working on independent research under the supervision of Dr. Mike Long and Dr. Braun on heart rate response during roller coaster rides.
MOST MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT SHIP:
My most meaningful learning experience at Ship would be my research class last spring. Not only did I get to conduct a research study, but I learned to appreciate the importance of research to academics and how much effort it takes to conduct a research experiment. I have a huge appreciation for research because of this class, and I plan to continue conducting research as much as possible.
COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES:
I do many service projects through the Honors Program and Exercise Science Club including King’s Kettle, performing physiological measurements at fairs, and helping at open houses.
WHAT I DO FOR FUN:
Hang out with friends, play volleyball, and play video games.
MY PLANS AFTER GRADUATION:
Attend physical therapy school to obtain my DPT (Doctorate of Physical Therapy).
