Master's of Reading Program

The Master's of Reading Program at Shippensburg University requires that candidates pass through various status categories from admission to graduation. The following describes those categories and the requirements. The status categories are: Foundational Status, Practicum Status and Program completion. During the admission process, each candidate meets with a reading faculty member and signs a planning sheet which outlines the candidate's course of study.  The following planning sheet is presently active for candidates accepted into the program after June 1, 2015.

Foundational Status

Foundational Status is granted to candidates who have completed all admission procedures and been granted foundational status by assigned advisor. Foundational Status enables candidates to enroll in foundational status classes.

Courses (Taken in Any Sequence)

  1. RDG524 Diversity's Impact on Literacy Instruction in a Standards Aligned System
  2. RDG530 Inquiry Approach to Literacy
  3. RDG520 Tutoring Secondary Students
  4. RDG528 Foundations of Literacy Development
  5. RDG529 Reading and Reasoning Beyond the Primary Grades

Additional Requirements

  1. Meet ‘standard expectations’ in professional dispositions
  2. Maintain GPA of 3.0 – at least a B grade in all coursework
  3. Electronic Portfolio approved by advisor per manual directions (requirement for candidates admitted before June 1, 2015)

Practicum Status

Practicum Status is granted to candidates who have completed all Foundational Level Courses and Requirements. Awarding of Practicum Status enables candidates to enroll in practicum level courses. To enroll in practicum level courses, email the Teacher Education Department Secretary.

  1. RDG537 Brain Based Literacy Strategies
  2. RDG532 Diagnosis and Assessment
  3. RDG533 Advanced Diagnosis and Assessment
  4. RDG534 Practicum in Reading
  5. RDG535 Seminar in Language, Literacy and Reading

Additional Requirements

  1. Meet ‘standard expectations’ in professional dispositions
  2. Maintain GPA of 3.0 – at least a B grade in all coursework
  3. Electronic Portfolio approved by advisor per manual directions.(requirement for candidates admitted before June 1, 2015)
  4. Passing Score on Reading Specialist Praxis Exam.

Program Completion Status is granted to candidates who have completed all Practicum Level Requirements.
