First and Only Accreditations

Shipensburg University has both institutional and specialized accreditations, including:

  • Grove College of Business-AACSB-International accreditation (first in System, continuous since 1981)
  • Software Engineering program 1 of only 26 in the nation with ABET accreditation 
  • Communication/Journalism program 1 of only 3 in PA accredited by Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC)
  • Criminal Justice (BS) program 1 of only 7 in U.S. certified by Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS)

  • 16 faculty selected to receive Fulbright Awards (7 in the last 6 years)
  • 2 students selected to receive Fulbright Awards


  • Honors student and math major Tristan Phillips received a Goldwater Scholarship Award for 2017-2018 (1 of 240 nationwide)
  • Social work major Amanda Smith selected for 2017 Newman Civic Fellowship (1 of 273 nationwide)


  • 100% of Counseling and College Student Personnel students taking National Counselor Examination (NCE) in fall 2016 passed; since 2005 the overall NCE pass rate is 94%
  • 40% of John L. Grove College of Business students have jobs before graduation; 90% find jobs within 6 months of graduation
  • Only State System school ranked in nation's top 40 for accounting graduates passing CPA Exam the first time (5th out of 294 medium-sized programs and 26th out of 858 schools)
  • Only State System school and one of 299 worldwide to have its finance program accepted into CFA Institute University Recognition Program


  • Dr. Ben Galuzzo, 2016 Henry L. Alder Award, Mathematical Association of American distinguished teaching award, 1 of 3 in U.S.
  • Dr. Joseph T. Zume, geography-earth science, Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship 2016, 1 of 70 scholars from U.S. and Canada
  • Dr. Alison Dagnes, political science, has written numerous books on the media and U.S. politics and is often called upon to speak including StarTalk, Voice of America, BBC, Washington Times, Trib Live, and Studio 360
  • Dr. Gerald Fowler, Educational Leadership, $1 million grant for Learning to Lead Urban Leadership Residency Program
  • Dr. Christine Royce, teacher education, is president-elect of The National Science Teacher Association and assumes presidency on June 1, 2018


  • 2016-17 Dixon Trophy for top overall athletics program in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (our 8th win, a conference record)


  • Charting the Course, Lighting the Way: The Campaign for Shippensburg University, concluded in Spring 2016, raised $69 million, far exceeding the $45-million goal and making it the most successful campaign in University and State System history

Service and Sustainability

  • 2016 U.S. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for nearly 61,000 student volunteer hours served
  • $1 million grant to create system for mapping and tracking land use in Delaware River Basin (Drs. Claire Jantz and Scott Drzyzga, Geography-Earth Science)
  • $500,000 grant to Jantz, director of SU's Center for Land Use and Sustainability, for water quality project in Delaware River Basin
  • SU Campus Farm
  • U.S. Green Building Council-Central PA top award for project to replace university's outdated heating and cooling systems received top award. The transition from coal-fired heating to natural gas-fired boilers resulted in:
    • 38% decrease in energy utilization index over previous four years
    • 68% reduction in carbon footprint
    • $330,000 annual savings in energy costs
