Baseball Camp
General Information
- All phases of the game of baseball will be instructed by coaches and players from the SU baseball team.
- Every camper will receive individual attention and position specific instruction.
- Skills competition will be conducted to evaluate each camper's basic baseball skills.
- Register early. Registrations are accepted on a first-come first-served basis.
- Things to bring to camp (label your gear) include: Bat, Glove, Batting Gloves, Baseball Hat, Spikes or Cleats, Sneakers, Game Pants, Shorts, T-shirts, Sun Screen, Towels, Fan, Swimsuit, Blanket, and other items necessary for overnight boarding. Catchers will need their own gear (borrow your Team's if you don't have any. The university is not responsible for lost or misplaced belongings.
- Housing: Only two participants will be assigned to a room. Two sheets, one pillowcase and a pillow are provided. No towels, washcloths, or blankets are provided. Bring a light blanket, washcloths and towels with you. Coin operated washers and dryers are available in the residence hall.
- Key Policy: Campers who do not turn in their room key at camp dismissal will be subject to a lock change fee (ranging from $25-$40). For security reasons, lock changes must be made immediately before the next group arrives. Keys returned after check out is not permissible. There will be no exceptions.
- We discourage visitation by family members during the week unless permission is granted by the camp director. Experience has shown that the campers are more receptive to instruction and less stressful when outside adults are not present.
- The only prerequisite is a willingness to learn.
- We must adhere to the designated age groups for each camp.
Staff
Staff coaches will include a select group of collegiate players and if necessary other highly qualified local coaches. In addition to coaching responsibilities, these staff members provide direct support and encouragement as role models to developing players. This is a unique aspect of the Shippensburg University baseball camp.
Others may be added to our staff. Staff subject to change.
Baseball camp director
Matt Jones is the head baseball coach at Shippensburg University. Coach Jones has an extensive background as a player and a coach. He has played and coached at the youth, scholastic, collegiate, international, and professional levels of baseball.
Day & Residential Camp objectives
The SU Baseball Camp is for individuals with an interest in sports and a desire to play baseball. Each participant will have the opportunity to improve in each phase of the game through concentrated practice and game situations.
All participants will receive personal attention to help develop their skills and abilities on the field. After they receive this instruction in a positive environment, they are bound to leave camp a better and more confident player.
All participants will generally practice and play in their own age groups – 6-8, 8-10, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18. However, we reserve the right to move a participant up or down depending on ability.
Our camp training will tend to improve a player's strength, power, endurance and flexibility. These attributes will be developed through the following daily schedule.
College Select Camp objectives
The College Select Camp is for high school players who want to get the attention of college coaches. The staff for this camp will include coaches from other colleges. Schools that can't send a coach to work will be invited to observe the games and drills at any time. This is a great opportunity for a high school player to get the attention of not just the Shippensburg staff but other schools as well. The Camp Staff will be announced the first day of camp so participants know what schools are represented.
Pitcher/Catcher Camp objectives
The Pitcher/Catcher Camp provides an opportunity for players to gain some valuable information regarding two of the most difficult positions to play. These are also two positions which players are most sought after at the higher levels of the game. We will teacher players about various aspects of their positions. Strength, conditioning, and flexibility will be a big part of this camp. Pitchers and catcher will both have the opportunity to work on their swings as well.
