Field Hockey Camp


Objectives

The objectives include instructing all campers regardless of ability level in the techniques and tactics currently used by the top high school and collegiate programs. Fundamental skills are emphasized combined with offensive and defensive drills and practices. Individual and team tactics are given each session. Game competition in the evening concludes each day. Our goal is to provide a positive field hockey experience for EACH camper and EACH team. CAMPERS are invited to attend as INDIVIDUALS or as part of a TEAM.

Camper and team evaluation

  • Evaluations will help campers/team identify hockey specific strengths and weaknesses.
  • Evaluations can be used to send to college coaches.

Corners

Specialized session on offensive and defensive corners covering each position.

Goalkeeping Session

The goalkeepers will participate in specialized training sessions where they will work on footwork, conditioning, mental concentration, goal circle techniques, and confidence building skills to prepare for game play.

Coaching Staff

The Staff include current and former international players, college and high school coaches. Counselors and junior coaches are top collegiate players.

Health & Disability Services

The university's Etter Health Center, with a nurse on duty 24 hours a day, is available to any camper needing medical attention. Requests for accommodations, auxiliary aids or services must be made in writing to the Office of Social Equity at least fifteen (15) days before the camp begins. The Office of Social Equity is located in Old Main 200, Shippensburg University, 1871 Old Main Drive, Shippensburg, PA 17257-2299, (717) 477-1329.

NCAA Regulations

Graduated high school seniors who will be entering college are eligible to attend camp.

General Camp Information

The camp is open to girls entering grades 9 through 12 in the fall of 2008. Girls entering their freshman year of college (2008) will also be accepted. Please complete the registration application and mail it as soon as possible. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Camp check-in

Sunday, July 27 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.

Camp check-out

Residence Hall Lobby
Thursday, July 31 at 1:00 p.m.

Housing

Only two campers will be assigned to a room in a residence hall conveniently located on campus which includes 24-hour supervision. Sheets, pillow and a pillowcase are provided, however, you must bring your own blanket, towels and washcloths. Coin operated washers and dryers are available in the residence hall.

Key Policy

Campers who do not turn in their room key at camp dismissal will be subject to a lock change fee (ranging from $25-$40). For security reasons, lock changes must be made immediately before the next group arrives. Keys return after check out is not permissible. There will be no exceptions.

Meals

The resident plan includes three meals a day in the dining hall. Commuters may choose from four different plans. Check the application for the plan you desire.

What To Bring

  • Personal Equipment:
    Shorts, shirts, sweat suit, socks, sneakers, swimsuit, rain gear, sunscreen, alarm clock, and fan are a few items we suggest that you bring. Water and ice will be available on the field. A water bottle will be given to each player.
  • Required Sports Equipment:
    Field hockey stick, mouth guard and shinguards are mandatory for participation in all field hockey activities. Turf shoes may be cleats, multi-cleat, or sneakers. Goalkeepers must provide their own equipment, i.e. helmet, leg guards, kickers, pelvic protector, chest protector, gloves, throat protector, and stick.

Facilities

The SU Field Hockey Camp will be conducted on the beautiful Shippensburg University campus, which includes turf field with lights, a large instructional area, and goalkeeping site equipped with cages. Due to our outstanding facilities, we have served in the past as the host of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) State High School Field Hockey Championships.

During the week, players will have the opportunity to use other facilities at Shippensburg University including the swimming pool, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, weight room, indoor/outdoor basketball courts (if available), and University store.
