Resumes and Transferable Skills

Facilitator: Jeffrey Hanks, Manager (Transition Assistance Program, Carlisle Army Barracks) 

Attend this session to discover how your military experience can be translated to describe your skills in a way that civilian employers will understand. Attendees will also receive basic information on formatting federal resumes.

How to Work a Job Fair

 Facilitator: Lorie Davis, Assistant Director (University Relations, Shippensburg University) 

Lorie will provide a brief overview of how to prepare for and make the most of attending a job fair.

Using Your Military Skills to Become an Entrepreneur: An Introduction

Facilitators: Cheryl Young, Consulting Manager and Michael Unruh, Director (Small Business Development Center, Shippensburg University) 

Have you always had a dream to start your own business but didn't know where to start? This workshop will help aspirng entrepreneurs to begin the process of successful business ownership including evaluating business ideas, developing a business plan, and exploring financing options.

Attendees will learn: 

  • Unique lifestyle requirements involved in owning a business
  • How to assess the feasibility of their business idea
  • Differences between business organization structures
  • How to develop a business plan
  • How to obtain financing
  • How to market their product or service
  • The applications and licenses needed to start their company

Networking and Interviewing

Employer Panel includes:

Panel discussion with employers from a variety of industries to discuss major interviewing points, including how to talk about your military experiences and transitional skills during the interview.  A networking reception with hors d'oeuvres will follow the one-hour long panel session. This networking reception will encourage veterans and employers to network and potentially lead to some internship/job opportunities.

At the conclusion of this event, each attendee will receive a "military to Civilian Transition Pocket Guide", which includes veteran-specific information about the following: Job search success; Transferable skills; Resumes; Networking; Job fairs; Military-friendly employers; Federal jobs; Interviewing; and Starting your own business.
