Description of Duties
The Dean of the College of Education and Human Services is the chief academic officer of the college and reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The dean is a member of the President’s Cabinet, the University Curriculum Committee, and various other university committees.
The dean presides over the College Council, the College Advisory Board, and other boards and groups. The college includes the following departments and programs: Counseling & College Student Personnel, Criminal Justice, Educational Leadership & Special Education, Exercise Science, Military Science, Social Work/Gerontology, Teacher Education, and the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School.
The dean of the college:
- Shares with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the deans of other colleges the responsibility for the formulation and administration of general academic policies and goals
- Advises the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs on all matters related to the college
- Provides leadership within the college for the development and coordination of graduate and undergraduate curricula and for establishment of short-term and long-term goals for the college in accordance with the university’s Strategic Plan
- Interacts with students and faculty to promote and facilitate a quality learning environment within the college. Has primary responsibility for student-related issues such as graduation requirements, academic dishonesty, and monitoring academic standing
- Supervises, coordinates, and supports profession-specific, discipline-specific (national), and state accreditation
- Encourages collaboration and interdisciplinary efforts within the college, with other colleges within the university, and with other universities
- Active in fundraising programs with advisory board management and works with the Shippensburg University Foundation in fundraising activities
- Monitors secondary education certification requirements with the deans of the College of Arts & Sciences and the John L. Grove College of Business.
- Ensures compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Education requirements
- Collaborates with the Dean of Enrollment Services and the Dean of Graduate Studies in the development and implementation of appropriate standards for admitting competent students into the programs of the college and participates in recruitment activities
- Develops and allocates the budget for the college with the assistance of department chairs and in consultation with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Budget Office of the University
- Participates in the selection and evaluation of potential college faculty, providing leadership in the development of appropriate standards for faculty recruitment and evaluation
- Encourages faculty professional development in the areas of scholarship, teaching, and service
- Evaluates college faculty based on appropriate observations and evaluations, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Serves, in many instances, as the initial hearing officer in faculty grievances in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Reviews class schedules as submitted by departments and programs, keeping the college within full-time equivalent faculty allocation limits
- Is responsible, along with other university officials, for the supervision and use of existing physical facilities and the incorporation of new technological equipment and programs
- Participates in programmatic and institutional assessment in co-operation with various deans and chairs and in consultation with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Associate Provost
- Coordinates School Study Council with other institutes and centers in the college
- Oversees the certification of all teacher preparation programs
