About TV Services

What you need

Digital Television Services – Residence Hall students must have a television or conversion equipment that contains a QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) tuner or supports QAM conversions to older televisions, in order to view the university’s television system. The QAM tuner allows your television set to receive unencrypted digital programming without the need for a set top box.

Most televisions manufactured after 2007 have QAM tuners installed. Some inexpensive televisions come with low quality QAM tuners that may limit your ability to receive all of the programming the university offers. Still others may require you to contact Customer Support to activate licensing codes that will allow the set to begin scanning digital programming. In any case, please check with your retailer or the manufacturer to insure that the set you have chosen supports ClearQAM programming.

Setting up your television

Assuming you are connecting your TV directly to the television jack in your room, make sure your television is plugged in to a working electrical outlet.

Read installation procedures provided by the manufacturer to be sure, but in general, locate the TV outlet in your room and connect one end of your coaxial cable to the wall outlet, and the other end to the “INPUT”, “CATV” or “ANTENNA” port on your set.

Exact details on how to auto program or auto tune digital TVs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model.

These instructions are generalizations that are meant to describe the way most TVs accomplish this feature. For best results, refer to the owner’s manual for the specific TV you are working with. Most TVs will take between 20-45 minutes to complete this function.

Using the TVs remote control, follow these general steps:

  1. Press the “Power” button to turn on the TV
  2. Press the “Menu” Button
  3. Select “Set-Up”
  4. Select “Cable” from the antenna or source options.
  5. Select “Auto Program/Auto Tune/Channel scan” then “OK”

You may notice that the scan process takes several minutes (often 20 or more). During that process the set will scan for ANALOG and DIGITAL programming. Many sets will provide you a counter to show how many stations the set has found so far. When the process is complete, if your QAM Tuner is not restricted, you should see 122 channels.

Older Analog or ATSC Only sets

If you are using a converter box to view the university’s digital programming on an older set please be advised: Many devices are not 100% completely compatible. There may be limitations on the number of channels it will translate; EAS (EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM) messages may not be displayed or closed captioning may not work. Please investigate your equipment and thoroughly read manufacturer’s detailed descriptions.

  • It is a very RARE occasion for a residence hall room to have an actual case of trouble with programming signal being delivered to the jack. Distribution is over fiber-optics to each building. Each building has its own video node. Each room has its own homerun of coaxial supporting the jack. If there are problems, it would more likely be a whole floor, a whole building or campus wide. Please completely investigate any possible trouble at your set before you contact residence life to report trouble. If you know of a TV that works, ask to borrow it quickly to see if that set works at your location. Once you determine the signal is working in your room you can begin to narrow down the set-up or equipment problem that needs to be addressed.
