SU names dean of College of Education and Human Services

Nicole R. Hill, Ph.D., LPC has been named dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Shippensburg University and she will begin her duties on July 1, 2017.

Dr. Hill, chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Syracuse University, was chosen after a national search following the retirement of Dr. James R. Johnson. Before her position as chair, she served as interim dean of the Graduate School and chair of the Department of Counseling at Idaho State University.

“Over the last 7 years, Dr. Hill has served in leadership and management positions that have prepared her to understand the complexity of issues emergent in a College of Education and Human Services,” said Dr. Tracy Schoolcraft, acting provost and vice president of academic affairs.

“She is well qualified to strategically engage in program evolution, student support, shared governance and program quality assurance.”

As a dual major in psychology and sociology, Dr. Hill received her undergraduate degree from Hanover College. Her master’s degree in community agency counseling and rehabilitation counseling was from Ohio University as was her doctoral degree in counselor education. 

Her scholarly interests include leadership development, academic resiliency, counseling children and adolescents, multicultural counseling competencies, professional development of faculty and graduate students and mentoring. She has published in nationally recognized journals and regularly presents at international, national, regional, and state conferences.

Dr. Hill said her professional initiatives focus on cultivating faculty and student development, championing humanistic engagement in professional communities and advocating for excellence. She described her leadership roles on executive boards of Chi Sigma Iota, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and Counselors for Social Justice, as contributing to her broad understanding of how to advance the counseling profession through service and advocacy. She is currently serving as President-Elect of Chi Sigma Iota, the International Honor Society for Professional Counselors.
