Luhrs School Box Drive
On November 10, 12, 13, and 16, 2009 the Honors Colloquium teamed with the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School fifth graders to sponsor a school supplies drive for childcare centers in Santo Domingo. The drive was held in Luhrs Elementary in the mornings before school started. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade were able to donate $5 toward the purchase of a supplies kit at a table set up in the main lobby of the elementary school run by Honors Colloquium students and members of the fifth grade class.
The kits included construction paper, scissors, pencils, erasers, and crayons. The students' donations also gave them the opportunity to decorate a canvas bag with a personal message for the children receiving the bags at the Dominican childcare centers. The bags will be taken with the Honors Colloquium students to Santo Domingo in January when the class implements the project.
Together with the Luhrs students, over 50 bags have been decorated and filled with supplies for the childcare centers. This means at $5 a bag, the drive raised over $300 towards the project! Donations are still being collected at Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School and the bags are still being decorated as well throughout the coming weeks.
