Death of a Student
Dear Campus Community and Ship Family,
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death Thursday of one of our current students. On Thursday afternoon, April 16, 2009, Thomas Rainey was found dead in his off-campus apartment on East Fort Street.
A representative from the Cumberland County Coroner's Office was at the scene and a local media outlet quoted that individual as saying there were no signs of foul play in connection with the death. An autopsy is planned for some time Friday, April 17, 2009.
Thomas was a junior sociology major and a former member of the Red Raiders football team.
On behalf of the university, I extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. A tragedy such as this can have an immediate and/or long-term impact on the campus community. Members of our Counseling Center and Campus Ministry Center are available to meet with individuals and groups who feel they need support at this time.
The Counseling Center's number is 477-1481 and the Campus Ministry's number is 477-1672. Please remember that this support will be available as long as needed.
Please keep Thomas and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
