Introduction

The Memorabilia Collection contains material dated from 1873. The items were received in the Shippensburg University Archives at various times over the years. The collection documents the activities of students, teachers, and alumni from the first graduating class in 1873 on. It also provides valuable insight into alumni relations and events.

Most of this finding aid is the result of work done by students in Dr. Steven Burg’s Introduction to Archives class (HIS494) in summer, 2003. Because of their work, the collection is described down to the item level through 1910. After that, the contents are not listed. The materials in each box are similar. If you are interested in a certain class year, please ask to see that box. We also have larger collections concerning Ada V. Horton (1888), Myrtle Forry Kauffmann (1925), Dorothy Miller Mowery (1930), and Howard Etter (1948).

The collection is available for research by appointment only. The suggested citation to the collection is:

Organizational History

Shippensburg University was established in 1871 as the Cumberland Valley State Normal School. The school received official approval by the state on February 21, 1873, and admitted its first class of 217 students on April 15, 1873. The school was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1917.  In 1926 CVSNS became the first normal school in Pennsylvania to be classed as a state teachers college, and in 1927 its name was officially changed to Shippensburg State Teachers College. In 1939, Shippensburg State Teachers College became the fourth school in the United States to be accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. On January 8, 1960, the official name of the school became Shippensburg State College. On November 12, 1982, the governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania signed Senate Bill 506, establishing the State System of Higher Education. At that time, the school was designated Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, effective July 1, 1983.

Scope and Content of the Records

Over the years, alumni and their descendants have donated items they collected during their experiences on campus. Usually each donation consisted of only a few items, not enough to warrant arrangement as a distinct collection. The practice has been to file the items by year in the Memorabilia Collection.

The collection includes materials from the class of 1873 on, with the bulk of the material covering activities pertaining to the classes of 1895, 1906, 1914, and 1925. At this time, there is little material newer than 1972.

The collection contains information relating to student and alumni activities. Items in the collection include announcements and programs of social events such as dances, performances, sports, and commencement activities. Other items include students’ report cards and final examination schedules, scrapbooks, and college pins. Also included are materials documenting alumni reunions and information about the personal lives and careers of graduates. This collection offers insight into the history and evolution of campus life at Shippensburg and serves as well to provide a glimpse of American college life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
