VPFA and VPSA
Dear Ship family,
After extensive national searches, I'm pleased to announce the July 1, 2008 appointments of Dr. Jan D. "Denny" Eakle and Dr. Roger L. Serr as vice president for administration and finance and vice president for student affairs, respectively. Both bring to their roles years of experience that will allow them to provide the leadership needed as the university continues to progress and meet the ever-changing needs of our students and the Commonwealth. I look forward to their support and counsel in the coming years.
I also want to thank members of both search committees for their outstanding work on these searches. Their hard work and dedication to their task as well as their discussion with me has resulted in the hiring of two individuals who now complete the senior leadership team.
Denny recently retired as a brigadier general from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of management experience in training, developing and directing a diverse workforce. She has extensive experience in the areas of finance and budgeting, facilities management and public safety. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from Baylor University in Texas, and her Ph.D. in operations research from the University of Texas at Austin. She was also a National Defense Fellow at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center for the U.S. Department of State.
Since 2006, she has been executive director of the 10th Quadrennial Review of Military Compensation. Prior to that, she was deputy director of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, vice commander of Ogden Air Logistics Center in Utah and commander of Kirkland Air Base Wing in Albuquerque, N.M. In addition, she also has experience as staff director for a 1,800-person organization with a $135 million budget, and commander of a 1,200-person organization providing city services for two strategic airlift wings.
Roger has served ably as the university's acting vice president for student affairs since June 2005. He joined the university in 1994 where he served as associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students. Prior to that, he was assistant director of residence life at Michigan State University, area coordinator in the Department of Residential Life at the University of Connecticut, a residence hall director and then a complex director for university housing and dining services at Western Illinois University and a residence hall director at South Dakota State.
He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University from the Department of Educational Administration, his master's degree from Western Illinois University from the Department of Counselor Education and College Student Personnel, and his bachelor's degree from Northern State College in South Dakota in sociology. He is a member of various professional organizations including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and has received various awards including the Shippensburg Area Chamber of Commerce Common Ground Award.
Please join me in welcoming Denny and Roger to their new roles.
Thanks again and have a great summer.
