Award-winning Photojournalist Honored for 2009
It was only four years ago when Joe O’Neill (2005) was sitting in the audience at Communication/Journalism Day as a student. A 2005 graduate, Joe used his SUTV and internship experience to land a photojournalist position with WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His relatively short career at WHTM has brought Joe a long list of accomplishments. In 2009, the popular photographer website, b-roll.net, recognized Joe as the national Best of B-Roll Photographer of the Year for market sizes 31 to 212. He has been honored with six Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominations and one Emmy Award. The Associated Press and the National Press Photographers Association have honored Joe with a number of awards, including three national NPPA awards.
According to Joe, his most honored accomplishment came this year when he helped WHTM win the 2009 National Press Photographers Association Medium Size Market Station of the Year. Two other Comm/Journ graduates, Mark Thompson and Eric Heisler, are also photojournalists on WHTM's award-winning staff.
For Joe, being a photojournalist is about much more than capturing pretty pictures. It’s all about telling quality stories. “My goal, day in and day out, is to help bring the viewer to the scene. You do that be capturing moments, compelling sound, and being right in the action,” says O’Neill. “Some people think being a photojournalist is about pointing a camera at the action and shooting video. They couldn’t be more inaccurate. This job is all about storytelling. It’s one of the most challenging positions in the news industry.”
