Lance Bryant


Lance joined the department in 2009 after receiving his Ph.D. from Purdue University. As a firstgeneration college student, he attended Berea College in Kentucky and completed his undergraduate work in 2002. His mathematical interests are in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. He also enjoys playing guitar and shooting pool.

Ji Young Choi


Ji Young was born and raised in Korea. She went to Busan National University, Korea for her BS and MS degrees in mathematics. Then, she came to the states for her Ph.D., where she studied combinatorics with professor Jonathan D. H. Smith at Iowa State University. She has been working at Shippensburg University since 2002. She likes nature and art, and she believes in humanism.

Winston Crawley


Winston completed his Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Tennessee, studying categorytheoretical properties for categories of topological semigroups and semilattices; he also took a number of computer science courses as a secondary emphasis. He joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Shippensburg University in 1976. He spent his first 25 years teaching a variety of both mathematics courses and computer science courses, as well as serving as a computer programming consultant for local businesses and state government agencies. When the department split, he threw his energy into the Math component of the department. He is the author (with C.E. Miller, and with W.G. McArthur), of several Computer Programming textbooks, as well as the author (with D. Ensley) of a Discrete Mathematics textbook. His current interests include the development of textual and online materials for introductory statistics courses.

Doug Ensley


After studying mathematics and computer science at his hometown college, University of Alabama at Huntsville, Doug moved to Pittsburgh and completed his Ph.D from Carnegie Mellon University, studying discrete mathematics and mathematical logic. He has been a member of the Ship Math faculty since 1993. Doug's professional interests lie largely in the development of mathematics curriculum and the use of technology in teaching mathematics. He is the author (with W. Crawley) of a Discrete Mathematics textbook, he has authored three successful grants under the National Science Foundation's Division of Undergraduate Education, and he is an active member of the Mathematical Association of America, for which he served as a national officer from 2010 to 2012.

Prior to joining the department in 1999, Tom taught high school mathematics at South Western High School in Hanover, PA. His undergraduate and master’s degrees are from Millersville University, and he earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Mathematics Education) from Penn State. Tom is active in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Pennsylvania Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. He enjoys reading, listening to music, and time at the beach.

Ben Galluzzo


With brief interludes in Budapest and Boston, the majority of Ben’s mathematical training took place in his hometown of Iowa City at the University of Iowa where he completed his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. Upon joining the Ship Math faculty in 2009, Ben has worked to incorporate modeling perspectives into much of the math that he does, both in and out of the classroom. He runs an annual math modeling contest for undergraduates, is a Head Judge for the SIAM/Moody’s Mega Math Challenge (for high school students) and regularly advises students in undergraduate research. As the PI of Undergraduate Sustainability Experiences in Mathematics (USE Math), an NSF DUE funded grant, Ben is currently focused on creating, sharing and organizing sustainability themed curriculum for introductory level math courses.

With humble beginnings as a college dropout at the age of 18, Debbie returned to school at the age of 32 when her youngest child was in kindergarten, graduating with her Ph.D. the same year that her oldest child earned a B.A. in Mathematics. Debbie earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Penn State Harrisburg and a M.S. in Mathematics from Shippensburg University. After spending several years teaching high school, and four years teaching at a private college, Debbie joined the Ship Math faculty in 2009. Her professional interests lie in mathematics education and learning disabilities that negatively impact students’ abilities in mathematics, and she enjoys partnering with mathematics education students to conduct research in learning disabilities. Debbie is an active member of mathematics and mathematics education organizations, serving on state and national committees, including serving as President of the Pennsylvania Council of Leaders of Mathematics from 2013 to 2015. In her personal time, Debbie likes to read, garden, tend the chickens, and spend time with family, especially her grandchildren.

James Hamblin


James received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin  Madison. He has been a member of the Mathematics Department since 2002. He is the author of Math for Liberal Studies, a textbook for a general education mathematics course. His professional interests include group theory, numerical semigroups, and the use of technology in mathematics education.

Lenny Jones


Lenny earned an M.A. degree in mathematics from Penn State University in 1978. He taught for two years at Penn State before joining the faculty at Shippensburg University. After teaching at Shippensburg for two years, Lenny returned to graduate school at the University of Virginia, where he subsequently received a Ph.D. in mathematics. He returned to Shippensburg in 1985 as an assistant professor of mathematics. His areas of research are algebra and number theory. Lenny enjoys traveling, drinking fine wine, eating gourmet food, and playing tennis.

After graduate study in mathematics at UCLA and U. Mass at Amherst, Dave ventured into the field of mathematics education, earning his Ed.D. from West Virginia University. He is a frequent presenter at national conferences, specializing in elementary math education but dabbling in topics such as lottery simulation, the work of Piet Hein, and fantasy football. Dave recently earned his 4th Category Title in chess, and enjoys running marathons when his knees allow it.

Kate McGivney


Kate received a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Hartford, a M.S. in mathematics from Northeastern University and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Lehigh University. After completing her Ph.D. she accepted a threeyear teaching postdoc position at the University of Arizona. She returned to the northeast in 2000 when she joined the faculty at Shippensburg. Her interests involve probability and statistics and she is currently the PI of STEMUP PA, a NSF ADVANCE fundedgrant.

Diane McNichols


Diane was born and raised in Queens (NYC), New York. She is a firstgeneration college student who earned her B.A. in Mathematics from Hunter College (CUNYCity University of New York). After receiving her Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from the University of South Carolina in 1982, she became an assistant professor of Statistics at Virginia Tech. When her husband completed his Ph.D. in Biology (from Virginia Tech) in 1987, they were very fortunate to find 2 academic positions at Shippensburg University. Diane’s professional interests are in probability and mathematical statistics. Most recently, she has been using technology to demonstrate the meaning of important statistical ideas in her Mathematical Statistics course. In her spare time, she loves to swim and travel with her family, which includes 2 adult children.

Luis Melara


Luis is a firstgeneration college student who completed his undergraduate degree at UCLA. His Ph.D. is from Rice University and he joined the department in 2008. His interests are in applied mathematics, numerical analysis,mathematical biology, differential equations and optimization. He is an active member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in the Sciences.He has been awarded funding from the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation (throughthe University of Colorado at Boulder). In his free time, he enjoys traveling, reading, watching movies and loves to dance salsa.

Kimberly Presser


Kim earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Pepperdine University in Southern California before moving east to complete her graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (M.S.) and the University of South Carolina (Ph.D.). While her Ph.D. was in the area of commutative algebra, Kim’s current research is in the field of Ergodic Theory building upon the work in her Master’s thesis. Kim has been a member of the Mathematics Department at Shippensburg University since 2000 and has served as the Developmental Mathematics Coordinator since 2003. She has devoted much of her time and research in the area of improving advising and pedagogy as it relates to helping under prepared students transition to the college level.

Marc Renault


Marc received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Temple University and joined the Ship math department in 2002. He received B.S. and M.A. degrees from Wake Forest University in 1994 and 1996. His mathematical interests include number theory and combinatorics. He also enjoys computer programming projects, and is a fan of Sage and GeoGebra.

Paul Taylor


Paul grew up in western Canada and received his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Saskatchewan. After doctoral work at the University of WisconsinMadison and postdoctoral work at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, Paul joined Shippensburg University in 2006. His current professional interests lie in mathematical modeling and developing the actuarial sciences program at Shippensburg.
